Don’t you hate it when you spend a good chunk of time typing a post (on your itty bitty phone mind you) just to find out that it didn’t save? Ugh. Here we go again.I spent the first Friday night of 2012 doing something I didn’t expect, but should have anticipated: fixing my bed.
Rewind: my bed has been “broken” for about 2.5 years now, so I really should have seen this coming. The slats that lay on top of the metal frame inside my bed would fall below the metal frame, causing part of my mattress to drop as well. At first, this would happen once in a while but over time it became more frequent. I quickly learned what spot on the bed to NOT sit on and soon enough, I was completely avoiding the left side of the bed. But if an unsuspecting friend plopped down on my bed to chat or if a dream about Ryan Gosling doing the “Dirty Dancing” lift with me had me roll over to the other side of the bed in slumber, KERCHUNK would go the slats and mattress. I’d promise myself that I would fix the problem when I had more time as I went through the temporary fix (which I got surprisingly good at!): I’d lift the mattress with my hands, balance it on my head and quickly pull the fallen slats back up and onto the metal frame. And yes, I could do this in the dark, half asleep. I was that good at it.
Now I had every intention of getting my bed fixed. Maybe not by me, but it would get fixed. Someday. I even had a friend who mentioned that he had a “problem”–he liked fixing things. (I quickly took a mental note of his “problem” and how I could help.) Fixing the bed was at the top of the list for a visit he was making to Portland in a few weeks!
Yet there I was on a Friday night, fixing my bed. You see as I sat down on my bed that evening, it decided that enough was enough and just died on me. The entire inside metal frame on the left side fell off the bed frame and plop went my mattress. I had no choice but to fix it: I had put it off long enough. I will admit, it was one of those moments where I wish I had a boyfriend who could fix it for me.
Luckily, I had something better: a friend named Megan. I wouldn’t call either of us handy, but we are resourceful and together, we make quite the team. Megan, and her sister Amanda who is interning here for the month, came over after dinner and together, we put my bed back together. The problem, a bent metal frame, would have been overwhelming if I was alone, but together we were able to fix it (or at least fix it enough) so that I can sit here on my bed and write this blog.
Here’s to fixing your problems today before they get out of control tomorrow, and to the friends who help you get through it!

That’s what happens when you have to take your bed apart.
