I looked at my shoebox of a room the other day and thought, “Where did all of this stuff come from?” I had sworn that I would only keep some stuff with me here in SF while the majority of my things were in Portland, yet somehow my room was full. Not only was it full, it was full of stuff that I wasn’t sure I needed. It was also a reminder that there was ALL THIS STUFF in Portland that I didn’t need, considering I had been gone for almost two years and much of my stuff was/is still there.
I read somewhere that if your living space isn’t clean, than your mind is cluttered as well. And I feel it. I feel like I’m always cleaning my room and tidying up. Always. And it was usually when I’m at my most tired is when I decide that it’s time to clean, but even so, it usually gets back to its organized chaos state pretty soon after. So it’s time to do things a little differently this time.
I read Marie Kondo’s, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up”, last year and felt inspired to make some changes. And I did, for a split second, but then the crazy lifestyle of always being on the go caught up with me and any good habits faded. Some of them still stayed, such as the one where if I come home and the outfit that I wore didn’t make me feel great, I would put them straight into my donation bags. The way that we keep the quality of our social circles high should be reflected in our surroundings as well. If it doesn’t add value to your life or bring you joy, get rid of it. Do you have any tips or tricks that you live by that help you?
I’m going to give it another go. In my opinion, deep cleaning your closet or bedroom is usually easier to do with a friend who is supportive but also keeps you on track and keeps it real with you. If your friend who does that for you lives elsewhere, a solid playlist and a focussed mind also help incredibly. I’m determined to transform my living space into one that is welcoming and open so that I can focus on my ideas and personal growth instead of always cleaning. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
